For The Scallop Lovers

For too long, seafood lovers have faced a choice: enjoy scallops or care for the ocean. Disco Scallops offer a way to indulge without the damage.

Conscious consumers understand that sourcing scallops involves dredging. Dredges penetrate the seabed with their spring-loaded teeth causing long-term damage to sensitive marine habitats and species. A large trawler will rake over 1 million square metres of seabed in a single day (>100 football pitches). In fact, >95% of scallops in the UK are caught by dredgers, with the rest from being diver caught.

Pot-caught Disco Scallops have the power to change the way we catch and consume scallops. With minimal footprint on the seabed, scallops actively swim into the pots attracted by the LED light.

Even better? The fishermen who can use this gear are “inshore” crab and lobster fishermen, which means they fish from smaller day boats and remain close to the UK shore. In recent years these fishermen have experienced a range of challenging factors, from Brexit to Covid, and currently there’s a high amount of pressure on UK crab and lobster.

By diversifying their catch with the addition of scallops, they can increase the potential value of their fishing trip.

Our Mission

To support UK fishermen, highlight the importance of fair and transparent sourcing, and lead the way in responsible scallop fishing methods that work in harmony with the ocean.
