Disco Scallops are scallops, caught differently.
We’re bringing innovation to scallop fishing, one disco light at a time.

Using LED light technology to attract scallops to swim into pots, Disco Scallops™ are high quality scallops with minimal environmental impact. Our Mission

What are

Disco Scallops?

As a gourmet shellfish celebrated for its sweet, buttery and delicate flavour, scallops are loved by foodies worldwide. Currently, almost all UK scallops are caught using dredges which are towed behind trawlers. Each dredge, equipped with spring loaded teeth, digs into the seabed to flip scallops into metal collection bags. Dredges are indiscriminate, in raking the seabed, they penetrate the seabed and damage sensitive marine habitats and species. A large trawler will rake over 1 million square metres of seabed in a single day (more than 100 football pitches).  A small quantity of scallops (<5%) are also diver-caught; these scallops are more selective but come with supply, safety, cost, and weather-related challenges.

Disco Scallops™ offer a balanced alternative. Using innovative pot-caught methods, we’re delivering quality scallops with minimal disruption to marine environments, bridging the gap between sustainability and scalability.

We envision a future where responsible fishing methods are the standard.

In 2024, protecting our oceans is more crucial than ever. Marine habitats are vital for fighting the climate crisis, playing a key role in supporting diverse ecosystems, regulating climate, and storing carbon. Certain fishing practices, like dredging, can impact these ecosystems and damage marine life.

Disco Scallops™ provide an innovative alternative. By attracting scallops with LED-light technology, we’re offering a more sustainable way to fish. Discover the benefits:

Non-destructive to marine habitats and species

Supports small-scale British fishing communities

Diversifies and boosts existing crab and lobster catches

Premium quality scallop meat (without grit quality issues

seen in dredge-caught scallops)

Undersized scallops are thrown back alive to live another day

Low carbon - No extra fuel use – leverages existing fishing trips

The Discovery

What began as a chance encounter — scallops drawn to lighted pots — has transformed into a breakthrough. Offering a gentler alternative to dredging, this method avoids marine habitat destruction and supports small-scale fishers with a new, high-value catch. After years of research and development, Disco Scallops™ are now ready to make waves on plates across the UK...
